Let there be light!

As winter settles in and daylight hours in the northern hemisphere grow shorter, the relative lack of sunlight can affect even those with the sunniest dispositions. It is no coincidence that December is designated as Seasonal Depression Awareness Month. Individuals with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) feel the change in sunlight most acutely. But in December’s dark days, anyone can begin to feel the need for a little more light.

Certainly it is a popular time of year to book trips to sunny destinations. But for many of us, the warm glow of the holidays is enough to dispel winter gloom. The holiday glow is manifested in the light that attends many of the season’s festivities and rituals. There are the candles of Advent wreaths and Chanukah menorahs; Christmas tree lights and elaborate home displays; and the seven candles of Kwanzaa. A light in the darkness is a symbol of hope. But in this season, even more so than others, it is appropriate to take note of those who bring the light of hope into our lives by their presence, support, and encouragement – and to reflect on how we can bring a little light into the lives of others.

For some among us, the holidays are a bittersweet reminder of what we lack or have lost – family and friends to celebrate with, for example, or a home to celebrate in. Certainly our homes play a central role in our holiday celebrations, and at this time of year, our ResCare HomeCare family takes particular satisfaction in the work we do to help clients continue to enjoy life in the comfort of their homes. Through the home care services that we provide, our administrators, nurses, and caregivers endeavor to bring light into the lives of our clients and their families year round.

As you and your loved ones keep the season in your own way – perhaps taking time to reflect on celebrations past and the changes that this year has brought – please call on us if we can bring a little light into your life or the life of someone dear to you. We may be able to guide you to resources that will make a real difference. Or you may benefit from any of a wide range of flexible, dependable, high-quality ResCare HomeCare services, delivered by capable staff and tailored to your particular needs.

With best wishes for a bright holiday,

The people of ResCare HomeCare
